Gender Identity Disorder In Children

There are many children through out the world who suffer from a condition known as gender identity disorder. This is a condition that impacts the child’s ability to relate to his or her assigned gender. The implications of having a gender identity disorder are far-reaching and long lasting through one’s entire life. It is a lifelong struggle that many people have to face. Some of the most common feelings associated with gender identity disorder include feeling as though one should have been born a the opposite gender, having the urge to physically alter one’s body in order to feel “right” to one’s self, and feeling comfortable in one’s own skin. These are just a handful of the challenges that people born with gender identity disorder will face through out their entire lives.

When a person is born with gender identity disorder, one of the most painful feelings is trying to identify why one feels uncomfortable being his or her self. When a child is born as one type of gender; however, he or she feels internally that their external physical appearance does not match they way they feel then it can be difficult to adjust to the reality of one’s gender. Where it might be painful for family members and friends to accept and understand how a loved one would feel as though they should be assigned to another gender, one must consider how the individual with a gender identity disorder feels. There is so much internal struggle that person must be facing on a daily basis that it must be so much more intense than how any family or friend could even imagine. There are surgeries that people can undergo in order to appear physically the way that he or she feels on the inside. One could take hormones and medications in order to start to transform to the other gender in order to feel “right.”

Being born with a gender identity disorder is not ever going to be an easy situation. There will be many times through out one’s life when there will be struggles with sexual identity and gender identity when born with this disorder. Some of the most common challenges associated with this condition include feeling as though one should have been born a the opposite gender, having the urge to physically alter one’s body in order to feel “right” to one’s self, and feeling comfortable in one’s own skin.
